The Green Tripe, stinky and beneficial
Natural prebiotic, improves skin, helps digestion, improves coprophagia (eating feces), helps with lGS, increased intestinal permeability syndrome, helps with IBS, irritable bowel syndrome), helps with some food intolerances
What is green tripe?
The green tripe is the fourth stomach of ruminants.
Ruminants (cows, sheep, deer, etc.) have four stomachs to digest all the plants they eat during the day (grass, roots, thistles, straw, flowers, etc.). These four stomachs are: the rumen, the reticulum, the omasum and the abomasum. When they eat plants, they swallow them almost without chewing and they pass into the rumen and reticulum, from there everything is regurgitated, chewed again and mixed with saliva, and then swallowed again. At this point it passes through the reticulum and the omasum to the abomasum, where it continues to decompose. This entire system converts plant matter into proteins and nutrients.
The rumen is what we call green gut for dogs and cats. Why is it called that? Because it is the first place where vegetables arrive, they are less decomposed and that is why it is colored green.
To preserve all of its nutrients for our dogs and cats, Green Tripe is not touched, washed or cooked, as we do when preparing our tripe.
Carnivorous dogs and catsDogs and cats, as we have already mentioned on previous occasions, are carnivores, and when hunting their prey they eat mainly their viscera. Most of their prey are herbivores from which they absorb all the nutrients from the plants that they as carnivores could not process on their own, since neither their saliva nor their digestive system are prepared for it.
Why is green tripe so beneficial?
Green Tripe, in addition to all the nutrients found in vegetables, also contains amino acids, digestive enzymes and other gastric juices that help digest the food itself.
Nutritional analysis of the Green Tripe reveals that its calcium-phosphorus ratio is optimal, its pH is rather acidic, which helps its digestion. It also has a high level of protein and fat, which the carnivores as dogs and cats are able to convert into energy. And, in addition, it contains fatty acids, Linoleic y Linolenic (Very important for the skin as they help create a protective barrier, flexibility, smoothness and hydration of the skin, …), in appropriate proportions, Lactobacillus Acidophilus (beneficial intestinal bacteria, main ingredient in commercial probiotics).
In summary, the main benefits of Green Tripe are:
- Reduction in stools, which are also harder and less odorous.
- Those dogs that used to eat feces (coprophagia), sometimes related to a possible enzyme deficiency, do so less.
- Helps with LGS, Increased intestinal permeability syndrome.
- Helps with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
- Helps with some food intolerances.
- In cats, it is common for their need to eat grass to decrease or cease.
Dogs and cats, how much can they eat?:
- If the dog or cat eats Barf diet, but have never tried Green Tripe: Our recommendation is to start little by little, since not being used to the load of bacteria and enzymes it carries requires an adaptation period.
- If the dog or cat eats kibble and has never tried Tripa Verde: As we have already mentioned before, raw food should not be mixed with kibble, as they have very different digestion processes. Therefore, you should wait 12 hours between taking kibble and Tripa Verde, and then, between taking Tripa Verde and kibble, about 6 hours. In addition, it is important to start little by little with small quantities and gradually increase as you see that it is working well for the dog, as an adaptation period.
- If the dog or cat has already eaten Tripa Verde and remembering that if they eat feed you must respect the digestion times mentioned, it is fine to give it to them once or twice a week, the recommended amount being half of their daily ration.
- If the dog or cat has a food intolerance to cereals: It is best to make sure that the Green Tripe comes from an animal that has been fed on grass, if not, Green Lamb Tripe would be the most recommended.
In the case of cats, as all their owners already know, they are a bit particular about food, so it is not certain that they will want to eat it... the best thing is to get them used to it from a very young age.
And as we always say, first of all, common sense. Just like with us, not everything suits us, and it may not suit our dogs or cats either. When you start giving them Tripa Verde, observe whether they eat it happily or not, whether they vomit or not, and what their stools are like.
Important about green tripe
Good green tripe is fresh, unwashed. Some commercial brands do wash it, so you should make sure before buying it that it has not been washed or treated in any way.
We warn you that it is very very very smelly and that it is not usual to find it even in the market's tripe shops. In our case, it is provided to us by our usual supplier of Barf diet, Squeaky, in frozen and unwashed form.
