How much BARF diet should I give my dog? Factors to consider:
When we talk about the Barf/ACBA Diet we must take into account several factors when rationing food:
- Age: dogs Due to the growth and activity typical of this stage, they have a higher energy expenditure than adult or senior dogs, which is why they are given more. On the contrary, a adult dog will tend to have less activity as it approaches the old age.
- Exercise: Due to the pace of life we lead, work, family, home, obligations, etc... our dogs do not get all the exercise they should. Therefore we must know our routine and the amount of exercise our dog gets. For example, a sporting dog (canicross, agility, etc.) will always need more than other dogs; in these cases, it is also necessary to differentiate between competition and training periods and rest periods (such as summer).
- Metabolism: Dogs, just like people, do not metabolize food in the same way. For example, nordic dogs (Husky, Samoyed, Alaskan Malamute...) tend to have an exceptional metabolism, and make the most of the nutrients, so you have to be careful when feeding them and even give them less ration. Another example would be "some" sterilized dogs that change their metabolism and tend to gain weight. We qualify “some” because this is only true sometimes; sometimes nothing happens to them at all, that is, their metabolism does not change, other times they simply have an increased appetite, and other times, it is true that they gain weight eating the same thing and therefore their daily ration should be reduced.
Recommended daily ration
To calculate the approximate daily ration that your dog should eat, we must take into account:
- su actual weight (if you are not overweight),
- su ideal weight (in case you are overweight),
- la stage of its life cycle in which it is found, that is, the age
- daily exercise that you do,
- your dog's metabolism.
Stage | Recommended amount based on current/ideal weight |
Sedentary or sterilized adult | 2% |
Normal Adult | 2,50% |
Adult athlete | 3% |
Puppy 2-4 months | 10% |
puppy 4-6 months | 8% |
Puppy 6-8 months | 6% |
puppy 8-10 months | 4% |
puppy 10-12 months | 3% |
*These quantities are indicative, we recommend being attentive to the dog's evolution.
Examples
India: 5 years old, podenco mix, moderate exercise (3h/daily), not overweight. Current weight 21 kg.
Calculation: 21 Kg x 2% = 420 gr/day
Nela: 6 years old, Nordic mix, moderate exercise (3h/day), overweight. Current weight 25 Kg. Ideal weight 23 Kg.
Calculation: 23 Kg x 2% = 460 gr/day
Since this amount is excessive due to their Nordic metabolism, we reduce the daily ration to 350 gr (1,5%).
